U.S. registers over 900,000 COVID-19 deaths

The cumulative death toll due to COVID-19 in the United States crossed the 900,000 mark on Friday, even as the daily number of fatalities has started to decline, suggest data compiled by Reuters. As of Friday, the Reuters tally suggested that the total number of fatalities due to COVID-19 since the first cases were detected in the U.S. has reached 904,067.

The latest data point to an increase of over 100,000 COVID-related deaths since December 12, corresponding to a spike in infections and hospital admissions, largely led by the Omicron variant.

Experts state that a majority of Omicron patients requiring hospitalization were unvaccinated and those who had underlying chronic health conditions.  Data also indicate that the Omicron variant may have hit the U.S. harder than other countries with younger populations overall… (Reuters, February 5, 2022)
